About getting a crown

Dental Tip of the week….When considering having a crown done in one visit here is some important info to consider. Crowns that are fabricated in one dental visit are almost always created by a CAD/CAM process. The crown is created by milling a block of ceramic. In my opinion there are positives and negatives regarding this process.

Some of the positive aspects of this are that:
1) there is only one appointment
2) the crown will often appear very life-like as there is no metal in the crown.

Some negative aspects to this type of crown are that:
1) often more tooth is required to be removed when doing an all ceramic crown (more drilling!)
2) certain types of all ceramic crowns can be more prone to cracking.

FYI – A “crown” is often referred to as a “cap” …they are the same thing
