Here is a a picture of a molar tooth that was infected with severe caries (decay).  All decay was removed and a pic was taken, notice the dark “pit” in the tooth!   This area of the tooth was not infected but rather affected by the decay that was removed in the moments prior to this photo.   The tooth was rebuilt with a fluoride releasing agent and then reshaped.  An impression was taken of this tooth with a putty and finally a temporary crown was fabricated.  See the associated pics.  In a few weeks I will post a picture of the final crown which will look amazing!
